Thai Express, Raffles City

Finally, I was able to go back to Thai Express to feature them in my blog. Last New Year's eve, we wanted to eat somewhere special yet tried and tested. And what better way to welcome the new year but with an explosion of flavours and spices that is Thai Express!

We were lucky that they had a special "Celebration Menu" on that day. Too bad though that they didn't accept any discounts from credit cards since it was the eve of a holiday.

For starters, we had "Nongkai Ma Nao" (S$7.90) - crispy drumlettes with lemon sauce.

This was divine! I never knew I could describe chicken wings as such, haha. They were perfectly crisp on the outside but tender and juicy in the inside. Parang tender juicy hotdog lang hehehe.

I had the "Woon Sen Kaeng Jeut Luk Ngaw" (S$10.90) - chicken tang hoon balls in soup with glass noodles. Wow! that was a mouthful for a name of a dish. Nevertheless, the dish itself was truly mouth-watering! (figuratively and literally hehe).

I've never seen anything like the chicken tang hoon balls. If you look closely, the balls had noodles inside as well. I was actually feeling bloated that day (whats new) so this light yet filling noodle soup dish was peerrfffeecctt!

Zach had the "Pad Thai Neua" (S$11.90) - thai stir-fried beef kawy teow. As you all know, pad thai is a thai-classic-must-try dish. This was also really good! The serving looks small in the picture (sorry wrong angle) but it was really good enough for 2 (small) people.

I like the interiors of Thai Express in Raffles City the best. Casual yet somewhat-elegant dining.

2 happy campers indeed! :-)

So now I can finally say that Thai Express is my ultimate favorite bestest Thai Restaurant in Singapore! Lerk Thai & Siam Kitchen move aside!

Pepper Lunch Express, Raffles City

Most, if not all, of the food bloggers in Manila have featured Pepper Lunch at least once in their blogs. So of course, I had to finally see for myself what the craze is all about.

We were actually supposed to eat at Thai Express but the freaking queue was so long. So we just headed up to the food court at Raffles City. And just my luck because they had Pepper Lunch Express.

I learned that Pepper Lunch has over 200 branches in Japan so they must be serving really good food to keep up with the demand.

Anyway, the mock-up food on display was enticing, it really made me salivate (I once saw on TV how they made these "fake" foods and if i'm not mistaken, they are made mainly of wax, glues and different kinds of plastic). Since this is the "express" version, the choices, serving and price is also downsized.

So I decided to go for the Cube Steak & Hamburger Combo ($7.90), so I can taste both the steak and the Hamburger.

I was really excited to mix and cook my own pepper lunch meal. I believe the best selling-point of Pepper Lunch is they give you the DIY feel of cooking your own food. And boy was I excited to prepare mine.

I took both the honey brown sauce and the garlic soy sauce so I can compare which one is better, and I agree with a lot of bloggers that the honey brown sauce is indeed yummier.

Grilling the meat in the sizzling hot plate and sauteeing your food while drizzling your choice of sauce really adds up to the pepper lunch experience. But seriously, in terms of taste, the beef and hamburger just tasted like, well, normal beef and hamburger. It's really the sauce that spells the difference.

So I'd say not bad. But I don't think I'd be crazy about it. :-)

The Soup Spoon, Raffles City

I LOoooOOvvEE Soup Spoon!!! No need to food blog because I already give them a 5/5! hehehe.

Whenever I'd like to indulge myself but not feel as guilty, I head straight to Soup Spoon. I think it's a brilliant idea to come up with a food store that is all about soup.

Nevermind the usual long queue and the slightly more expensive price because to me it is all worth it. I never really thought I could enjoy soup and feel full at the same time. I have always thought of soup as a starter but not as the main meal.

Their soups usually come with your choice of bread but this time we opted to "upsize" it to Naan for $1.50, add cheese and you add $3.00. I think it's a good idea to have a curry-based soup as I usually associate Naan with indian or mediterranean cuisine. Nevertheless, the Naan was good. Very chewy and perfect to dunk in your soup.

Zach had the "Beef Goulash" - described in their website as "prime beef-cut stewed with the infamous paprika and loaded with starchy vegetables to make it a meal in itself." I already had this before so I opted to try something else but I must say, this is really a meal on its own. There was so much veggies and beef that you could actually pair it with rice. Moreover, it's very healthy and yummy!

For $10.80, the beef goulash came with the "Chicken Tikka Wrap" - tandoor chicken with mango chutney, mint cucumber, red onions and romain lettuce. Another yummy treat!! hehe I'm so bias. But really, the tangy taste of the chutney plus the tender chicken was perfect with the bread.

I had the "Velvety Mushroom Stroganoff" - described as "feels almost like eating fresh mushrooms out of the field. The mushrooms are so smooth, they glide down the throat. This soup is overpowering with the aroma of mushrooms perfect for mushroom lovers."

Ok! I get it alright, mushrooms. That description was overkill... But indeed there was mushrooms everywhere. Too many that the soup was too thick. But still gloriously yummy!

To complement my soup, I had the "Teriyaki Fish Sandwich" ($10.60, with soup) - teriyaki fish with red onions, green salad & wasabi mayo. I'm not sure about the teriyaki fish but the wasabi mayo gave that extra layer of flavor & spice. My least favorite but not too bad all in all.

I sum up my soup spoon experience as healthfully appetizing!! (if there is such a phrase, haha). I just love the fact that you can enjoy your food for less the fat & calories. Some soups are a bit more caloric especially the cream-based ones but I think compared to eating a fastfood meal, soup spoon is definitely the wiser choice, bar none!

Here is my rating for Glorious Soup Spoon (haha):
